Michael Bay in Early Talks to Direct as Steven Spielberg Takes Creative Lead

The news: The original Transformers brain trust is getting back together. Paramount has put Steven Spielberg in charge of the creative direction of the eighth live-action Transformers film, with Michael Bay in early talks to return to the director’s chair, Deadline reported Tuesday. It’s one of the first big swings of the Skydance era — a back-to-basics play after Bumblebee ($467M) and Rise of the Beasts ($441M) underperformed.

• Jason Fuchs (It: Welcome to Derry, Argylle) wrote the script, which is set in the modern day — a break from the ’80s/’90s settings of the last two films.
• Shia LaBeouf will not return.
• It would be Bay’s sixth Transformers film and his first since 2017’s The Last Knight.
