What We Thought2.5/5
April X is a near-future sci-fi thriller following Baxter, who gets himself into trouble with a dangerous criminal before his twin sister April disappears. His search for her eventually leads into a much darker story involving women being cloned for sex trafficking.
The movie has a lot going on, and that's part of the problem. Baxter is dealing in cloned organs, owes money to a dangerous criminal, searches for his missing sister, and eventually gets pulled into the cloning storyline. I had a hard time feeling like all of these pieces came together coherently. Some disjointed editing choices make the story feel even more fragmented.
The acting is good overall, although some of the dialogue feels stiff. Visually, the movie looks polished and does a good job creating its near-future world.
The bigger problem is that for all of its different storylines, April X still feels surprisingly generic. Nothing about the movie grabbed me enough to make it stand out from other dystopian sci-fi thrillers.
There's a lot happening here, but very little of it feels memorable.
